What is your current job?

I'm the Board President of NANPP and I also am the Chief Development and Communications Officer for a wonderful organization which provides supportive housing and other services to formerly homeless veterans and young adults in New York City. 

What was your first nonprofit job?

I was a grant writer. I left journalism to use my writing skills to help others. 

What do you love most about the nonprofit sector?

That there are millions of people who wake up each day who are passionate about helping others. I also love the laid-back work environment in many nonprofits. 

What’s your pet peeve regarding the nonprofit sector?

I have two. The first is believing that nonprofit employees are somehow not as smart as out for-profit counterparts and we selected the nonprofit second as a plan B career. That nonprofit employees do not invest enough in our own self-care. 

What's your personal mission? Ending youth homelessness. No child should have to sleep on the streets in America--ever! 

What do you see is the largest challenge for nonprofit employees?

More work-life balance and self-care. Four-day work weeks. Working remotely. No one wants to discuss it specifically, but dare I say we are the most overworked employees, both physically, and certainly mentally. We not only give our hearts to those, but just because we spend most of our days dealing with societal issues that drains many of us. Burnout is a reality for many of us. 

You have some great benefits for members, what would you like to add?

We are working on getting those great group discounts for our members. Many nonprofit employees are always seeking ways to save money. 

What advice would you give someone who is thinking about working in the nonprofit sector?

Make sure you are passionate about the mission of the organization or you will likely be unhappy. Also, search on agency websites, many of them maybe be small and will not post on job sites such as Indeed. Opportunity Knocks is a great place to search for nonprofit jobs.
